Part numbers in the drawings can be used to order the parts at McMaster-Carr.  Type in the part number in the McMaster-Carr search window.

The guide shown is one a customer actually made using these plans.  He actually had a local machine shop do the work for him from the plans.

PDF version of Hollow/Flat Grind Bevel Jig plans.  Including assembly drawings, detail part drawings, parts list, hardware list, material list, assembly tips.

Description

This download contains the PDF plans, the DXF files, and Downloadable 3D CAD model.

They include the PDF plans, the DXF files, and 3D CAD model.  With these files you can make your own parts or have your parts quickly and accurately CNC machined.  The 3D CAD model is able to be edited to fit your specific application needs then you can generate the new DXF files.

This DIY version is what I first was building using simple shop tools other than the milled out slots and cutout.

Use the link below for assembly reference.  It is an interactive image that can be zoomed, rotated, and exploded to show detail.

This guide will enable you to do Hollow and Flat grinds with accuracy and repeatably each time.  Great product for the beginner or for the professional.  Allows you to work very fast while maintaining accuracy.

Freehand grinding is an art to be sure.  However not all makers have the time or interest in developing the art of freehand grinding.  Early on in my knife making I made the decision to use technology as much as possible to reduce the production cost of my blades without sacrificing performance.  To me this method represented the best balance of value for my customer.  Spending hours doing something by hand that a CNC machine could do in seconds at 3% the cost is just smart to me.  I work very hard to eliminate cost that does not provide real world benefit to my customer.

In keeping with this philosophy of value added cost I designed this guide tool.  It greatly reduces the variability of freehand grinding to deliver accurate matching grinds that can be repeated each time and done at far greater speed than typical freehand grinding is capable of.  When combined with the blank carrier method and edge down blank grinding this guide takes grinding to a higher level of performance than offered by any other guide currently available. By grinding edge down sanding belt life is extended dramatically.  Many of the high performance ceramic grit sanding belts such as 3M Cubitron II require high speed and high pressure to fracture the grit and maintain a good cutting edge.  It is difficult while freehand grinding to accurately apply sufficient pressure to the belt to fracture the grit and keep it sharp without making a mistake on your bevel.  The guide eliminates this concern.  With it you are able to put heavy pressure on the belt while maintain positive control of the blank.  Thus increasing belt utility, life and decreasing your production time per grind.

When doing the initial grind I set my sander speed at 7200 surface feet per minute and use a 36 grit 3M Cubitron II belt.  At this speed and grit the metal flies off of the blank.  I currently have a belt that has ground 50 blanks this way and is still going.  I attribute this long life to edge down grinding.  Prior to doing edge down grinding my best was 19 blanks before all of the grit was stripped off of the belt.  Once I get most of the material removed I switch to a 3M Cubitron II in 80 grit to clean up the grind a bit.  Then I put on a Tri-Zact 220 grit to finish the bevel for pre-heat treat.  When I first started knife making I saw tons of makers stating that they get 3-5 knives per belt.  Now that I have more experience I know they are wasting money by either selecting the wrong belt, grit or grinding method and adding cost to their knives without adding any additional value of performance.

This guide will not only do hollow and flat grinds but also put the secondary (cutting bevel) on your blade complete with strop using a leather belt on your sander.

If you are ready to unleash the potential of your belt sander then this is the guide for you.

I watched Mr Belnap with his first creation then found his upgraded version and felt this was a very forgiving unit for the knife builder…I initially felt I wanted to order one before I tried to fab mine using his plans but ultimately decided to first give it a try after I downloaded his plans which by the way, was very generous of him to do so…He had quite a bit of time in design and then offered it to those of us that had a bit of the mechanical ability to fab one at no cost…Kudos to Mr Belnap for doing this…
So after receiving the drawings the brain kicked into over drive and I soon realized I could get it pretty darn close to a nice fit with the few tools I had laying around the garage…I fabed mine out of .250 thick flat aluminum plate that I had quite a bit of laying around the house…Using my Table saw to make the cuts and my 2×72 belt sander along with my lathe to make the slots for the angle guides to slide in (very creative on my part using the lathe for this operation) all was completed
Well Needless to say all went well and my tool is better then I had hoped for…
For the few knives I will build in the future the tool will make the grinding so much better and even more more accurate for those of us that are anal about the quality of our product which represents us…
One more time a HUGE Thank You To My Belnap for supplying the plans at no cost to us…Thank You

This is a very good, thought out design that helps a lot to control the grind. It is particularly nice because of the cost 😉.Very decent of you to give the plans away free of charge. Thank you sir!

Got this for a friend who is an aspiring blacksmith. Was easy to print and download, although I have no clue if it works. But thank you kindly for helping others starting out. Mentoring… Even from afar is a dying thing. Amazing the help… From thousands of miles. Appreciated greatly
