I built my first 2″ x 72″ sander about a year and a half ago. I used steel tube. It did well but I noticed that the slop in the machine due to the steel tubing was beginning to slow me down because I had to be very careful during each machine setup change to ensure that I took the slop out of the machine in the same way each time to ensure matching bevels. One day I noticed that aluminum extrusion was very good dimensionally and decided to try making a new sander using it. I did not do a total redesign but did incorporate a number of features that I felt would provide real world benefits. The clamping system was redesigned to provide a very positive and fast lock that required very little attention to get it perfect each time a change was made in the setup. Next the tensioner arm and platen were redesigned. The tensioner I made with a locking system so the pelt could be tensioned without having to move the platen, or wheel as is often required with a spring tension system. This allows for faster belt change with less moving of the platen or wheel. The platen was redesigned to be easier to change angle while still allowing fast positive position locking.

Please check back in April for the plans.
