Less than two years ago I built a 2 x 72 sander from plans purchased online. It was a huge improvement over the 1 x 42 sander I had been using. As my skills improved I found myself being limited by the sander. The materials called out on the plans I bought had very sloppy tolerances. In my search for better material I found that aluminum extrusions are very tight on dimensional tolerance and that a 1.5″ square extrusion will slide perfectly into a 2″ x 1/4″ wall extrusion. The fit was so good in fact that I redesigned my entire sander using aluminum extrusion. I redesigned the clamping system that was previously a set bolt that presses against a slide bar to hold it in place which causes damage to the slide bar. The clamping system now grips the entire outer surfaces of the slide bar which automatically centers it, and holds it very tight and rigid without causing any damage. Setup changes are very fast and sure.
This slide eliminates the problems that are encountered with the sloppy steel tube, and set bolts. It slides easily and is automatically centered as the clamp is tightened. No more trying to get the slop out the same so you can get matching bevels.
